Our founder, Estera Casaprovici, grew up in four different countries, moving to a new one each time. Learning a new language without knowing a single word beforehand was undoubtedly a challenge. After just a couple of months, she started receiving numerous compliments on her language skills, often being compared to people who had migrated 10 years before her.
This prompted her to reflect and ask herself, 'What am I doing differently?' It was then that she decided, 'It's time to help others achieve this too.'
Estera analyzed her surroundings, engaging in daily conversations with migrants and people in general trying to learn a new language. The first thing she noticed when she moved abroad was that all her friends were locals. She made a conscious effort to communicate in the foreign language from the start, even though she didn't know a single word beforehand. In contrast, other migrants formed circles with people from their own countries. The second thing she realized was the importance of having support. Her surroundings never judged her for having an accent in the beginning, allowing her to practice without fear and shame.
Immersion
The third thing she discovered was the importance of immersion. Living abroad, she was so immersed in the foreign language that her brain had no choice but to learn it. That's the power of being abroad to learn a new language—you hardly notice you are learning.
The fourth thing she realized was the true meaning of learning by doing. While her friends back home were downloading language learning apps, she was abroad practicing everything in real-life scenarios. This is exactly what Estera wanted to create with Speakk.
